If you are not a budget traveler, HI stands for “Hostelling International”. Basically it’s a group of more than 4000 hostels around the world coming together to achieve a minimum level of service. In some countries, this hostelling organization has different names such as in England, it is known as YHA. You have to realize that the hostels in this organisation are not always the cheapest or the best, so it is still up to the individual traveler to look for one that will suit his or her needs.
This particular hostel has the best location in Bodø if you are arriving by train. Since the hostel is located right at the train station, you don’t need to haul your luggage across town. Checking in is a breeze as it appears that we were the only ones staying for the night and we had the whole hostel to ourselves. The manager, Mari, was ever friendly and made us a great breakfast. We had initially booked a private double but Mari kindly gave us a quad room since it was bigger.
Accommodation rating: 3.5
Everything was reasonably clean but there seem to be a layer of dust on the floor. Even though the heating was centrally controlled, it was warm and I have no complaints. For a hostel, the mattress was comfortable enough. The kitchen was nice with everything you may need even including some oil and salt, which I supposed was left by previous guests. The lounge was big enough to accommodate a big group and there was a large flat screen TV.
Value rating: 3.5
Even though I paid 400 NOK for 2 persons, it was a promotional price. The normal price is about 800 NOK and in my opinion it is expensive for a hostel. However if you consider the alternative, you don’t have much of a choice and the location is top notch.
Information:
Night stayed: 27 Dec 2010
Total cost: 400 NOK
Room stayed: Quad room
Washing and drying laundry: 40 NOK

The Hostel occupies the top floor while the train station is at the lowest floor.
The entrance is located right at the side of the building.
The corridor is clean and neat but it kind of looks like an institution.
One of the bigger and well equipped common room that I have come across.
The kitchen is well equipped to handle more users.
This room has a double bunk bed and 2 singles at the other end. Might be a bit squeezy for four though.
Every room has a bathroom so there shouldn’t be a problem of people queuing up.
