Westminster Hall’s claim to fame is its roof. At a span of 69 metres, it is the largest unsupported timber Medieval roof in Northern Europe. The hall was built by King William II between 1097 and 1099. However, the roof was rebuilt by King Richard II during the late 1390s and finally completed in 1401. Since then, it has survived many air raids during World War II and the place is still being use for the Lying-in-state for important people so that the public can go and pay their respects.
