Carry a 20kg backpack for 3 months when I hardly eat enough to weigh 60kg? Who am I kidding? Carrying a bag that weighs about a third of my weight is definitely not my idea of fun. Therefore in comes a trolley bag which lets you roll your luggage most of the time, but comes with straps so that when it is really necessary, you can backpack it.
This is exactly what the Lowe alpine TT Destination 60 does. It has straps which you can setup when needed or you can stow them away its own compartment when using as a trolley bag. I saw it on sale online and I decided to buy it for my Europe trip. Using it during my short trip to Edinburgh, it works as it should. However, I didn’t get to try it as a backpack because the bag only saw action from the car to the bus and finally to the hotel. I find that it’s usually always possible to use a trolley bag or suitcase in an urban environment.
These are my findings after packing and using it:
1) Since this is a hybrid bag, there are certain tradeoffs involved. Firstly the bag is not as light as it should be because of the integrated harness, but it is still pretty light. Secondly, you also sacrifice some space due to the storage of the harness.
2) No issues with the rolling, the wheels works fine and the frame should not have any problem with the load. Even though it is rated at 60 litres, it doesn’t hold a lot in my opinion. Therefore it is very unlikely you would be able to pack it really heavy anyway.
3) Due to the tall and slim profile of the standing trolley bag, it is very easy for the bag to slip forward. To combat this, Lowe alpine has place a pair of small rubber “stoppers” to give the front feet some traction. They work well when new but in less than 5 minutes one of them has split. They also tend to move thus rendering them useless. I would recommend some tape around them to make the setup more durable and you can always retape when they get worn.
4) It can difficult to setup the harness when the bag is packed. The harness need to be secured to the bottom of the pack with 2 hooks and it is most easily secured when the bag is facing down. If you know that you are going to have to use the harness, it may be a good idea to set it up when you have the chance.
Overall it is a good quality bag but it is a tad expensive considering the fact that trolley bags can come really cheap.
Price paid: £93.95 with delivery.
