Even though Lacock Abbey is famous for many reasons, the most recent claim to its immense popularity must be the fact that the abbey is being used for filming scenes for the Harry Potter movies. Scenes from the first 2 movies, Sorcerer’s Stone and the Chamber of Secrets, as well as the sixth movie The Half Blood Prince were shot in either the Lacock Village or the Abbey. Not only of Harry Potter fame, there were also other big budget movies being shot in this location, such as The Other Boleyn Girl and The Wolf Man.

I must say I am very impressed with the set designers from these movies as I recognized almost nothing from the movies that resembles the places I saw in Lacock Abbey. One really has to pause and try to recall the movies. All I can see in the abbey are cold hard floors and tired interiors but in the movies they are transformed magically to give a sense of mystery and excitement.

Enough of the movies I say as the abbey itself is rich in history ever since being founded in the 13th century. For example William Henry Fox Talbot was once the owner and resident of Lacock Abbey. Talbot is most famous for being a pioneer in photography and is widely credited for the invention of the negative/process which is the basis of modern photography. The Lacock Village is also a delight to visit with many cottages retaining their very old appearances which makes you feel as if you are stepping back in time.
