30th May 2010
As the last stop for my roadtrip in May, I have chosen Bolsover Castle for the next destination. Castles are usually built for defense however it was not the case for Bolsover Castle. The buildings still standing today were built in the 17th Century by Sir Charles Cavendish and his son William Cavendish. The inner keep, called ‘Little Castle’, is beautifully restored with very interesting wall and ceilings paintings.
Included in the ticket is an audio tour. Remember to allow about at least 3 hours to fully explore this attraction and also allocate more time for the Little Castle as there are some very interesting paintings and decorations there.
Globenomads review rating: 4/5
The audio tour is good and educational with a lot of interesting information. Marvel at the exotic and intricate paintings at your leisure.

I think the 4 paintings represent the 4 cardinal virtues temperance, prudence, fortitude and justice. They are explained in the audio tour but I can’t remember. If you know, please leave a comment.

Oh, a real life Robin Hood there. Btw, I absolutely love the paintings on the walls and ceilings. Thanks for sharing!
