The reception area is a common area or landing area on the ground floor which is very much similar to the last B&B; we visited. After ringing the bell, Andrew received us and showed us to our room. We were pleasantly surprised by the size of the room as it is huge. The suite has 2 rooms joined by a living room. There is only 1 bath/toilet and it is connected to the living room. If anyone needs to use the toilet he or she will have to go through the living room. The TV for the living room is also rather small for the size of the room. Even though the room is advertised as having scenic view, I am not too sure if there are any or maybe my standards are just too high.
There is central gas heating throughout but they cannot be individually controlled. As many of you will know, this kind of heating system do not usually heat up all the rooms all the time but the heat circulates among the different rooms. The heating panels have valves at the side that limits the heat into the radiation panel. Therefore, once you check in it is important to check the valves to ensure that they are open else you might miss out on the heat circulation and end up sleeping in a cold room. That’s what happened to us but luckily the weather is not too chilly on that day. On the plus side the suite is tastefully decorated, the bath is luxurious and the usual toiletries are provided. The common areas are also furnished to a high standard.
This B&B; is larger than most and the scale of operation is nearer to that of a small hotel than a cozy B&B.; We have no problems with that but some guests may feel that the hosts and hostess are too distant for a B&B.; This place also feels rather commercialized.
Accommodation rating: 4
The room is good but suffers from some minor design issues such as access to the bath and the heating method. The shower screen is also too small and water is likely to splash out no matter how carefully you use the shower.
Value rating: 4
Graysonside offers good value with a brilliant breakfast. There is a double room available for £70 per night and if you are able to book that, will offer even more value. (please refer to ratings explanation)
