The defenses of the Castle were buffed up extensively during the 18th century in anticipation of the war against Napoleon. In the 20th century, Dover Castle was also used extensively in the First and Second World War. You can see anti-aircraft guns on its outer walls and also anti-ship artillery guns near the coast.
Included in the admission price, is a Secret Wartime Tunnel Tour. The tour started with a video which lasted about 10 minutes. The video gives a history of the tunnels and how it was used during World War II especially during Operation Dynamo. Sadly photography is not allowed and I can’t show you how the tunnels looked like. Firstly I have imagined the tunnels to be narrow and claustrophobic but they turned out to be rather wide and spacious. However, they also packed a lot of soldiers into the tunnels.
Globenomads review ratings: Dover Castle: 3.5/5 The castle is huge and has potential to become an outstanding attraction but most parts of the castle were left untouched. Given its long history, much more could have been done.
Secret Tunnel Tour: 2/5 There are warnings about health risk and the tour being unsuitable for people with weak heart condition. However, the most exciting part I find about the tour is the video right at the start. I think that pretty much sums it up. (please refer to ratings explanation)
The massive dry moat
Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay, commander of Operation Dynamo
Wonders of modern civilisation. You can find rubbish in the most unusual places.
Fire command centre above the tunnels.
Ships fly different flags to convey messages. Here is a system whereby each flag represent a different letter from the alphabet.
Ship passing through the breakwaters of Dover Harbour.
White cliffs of Dover. Cliffs at Beachy Head seems to be much whiter though.
