24th April 2010 Afternoon
After a long and tedious drive from London and Wakehurst Place with intermittent glimpses of the sea, we finally reached Birling Gap. The English Channel with its rolling mists and foggy horizon was a sight to behold after spending most of last year in the city. It could well be a luxury to lie on the cliff top soaking in the sun and feeling the sea breeze on a day as fine as today. Staring at the mists, one wonders what may lie beyond them. Nowadays, we could make a ferry crossing from England to France in less than 2 hours.
Walking towards the cliff edge where the ground seems to disappear into nothingness inspired a strong sense of vertigo which made my knees wobbly. All afternoon we walked along the cliff tops towards Beachy Head and back. The terrain was surprisingly hilly and we found ourselves going up and down the cliff tops. We did not have time to walk down to the Falling Sands to the Beachy Head lighthouse because the tide is rising and it was getting late. We decided to head back to enjoy the sunset at Birling Gap.
